Facts you need to know about Kim Seon Ho and Go Yoon Jung’s “Can This Love Be Translated?”

Starring Kim Seon Ho and Go Yoon Jung, Can This Love be Translated? depicts the romantic and comical love story of a multilingual interpreter who can speak English, Japanese, and Italian, and an unknown actress who suddenly becomes a top star.

1. Written by Hong Sisters

This drama is penned by the acclaimed screenwriters Hong Jung Eun and Hong Mi Ran. They are known for writing scripts for romantic comedy and fantasy genres. Their masterpieces include My Girl, You’re Beautiful, The Greatest Love, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Master’s Sun, A Korean Odyssey, Hotel Del Luna, and Alchemy of Souls.

2. The roles were first offered to Son Suk Ku and Han So Hee

The roles Joo Ho Jin and Cha Mu Hee were first offered to Son Suk Ku and Han So Hee. It was on April 13, 2023, when SBD Entertainment revealed that Suk Ku received a casting offer to play Ho Jin in the series. However, due to his personal circumstances, he wasn’t able to meet the Hong sisters and had to focus on his drama, Nine Puzzles.

On the other hand, on July 3, 2023, Han So Hee’s agency, 9ato Entertainment, announced that the actress received a casting offer to play the role of Cha Mu Hee, along with the news about Kim Seon Ho‘s positive review of the script. This should be their drama reunion after their 2018 drama, 100 Days My Prince, if So Hee accepted the offer. Nevertheless, there’s a reason behind everything, and because of that, we can see the chemistry of Kim Seon Ho and Go Yoon Jung in this series.

3. Kim Seon Ho and Go Yoon Jung’s First drama together

This is Seon Ho and Yoon Jung’s first drama together, and yet, their comical and romantic chemistry is overflowing in the series. Though they have a 10-year age difference, it didn’t show in the series because of their perfect portrayal of their respective roles.

They also shared that they called each other Mu Hee Ping and Ho Jin Ping. When it was super tough on the set, they cheered each other by saying, “We got this, Mu, Of course, Ho”. They are so cute!

Yoon Jung shared on Na PD’s YouTube Channel that before shooting, during meetings, and script readings, she felt a little uncomfortable. However, once the rehearsal began, Seon Ho shared a lot of his ideas, and they discussed them extensively. These ideas helped them bond quickly and become closer while traveling together for filming.

Seon Ho shared in his interview with Elle Korea that he believes chemistry naturally forms when both people open their hearts. Fortunately, he and Yoon Jung were very well aligned in terms of their energy and approach on set and in their acting. He said they focused on making the two characters feel real, doing their best to truly ‘live’ in each scene as naturally as possible. He also added that he is lucky to work with such wonderful people. It’s a project that came with a lot of good fortune for him.

4. Filming Locations are in Korea, Japan, Canada, and Italy

One of the things you’ll love about this drama is its cinematography, which highlights the beauty of its filming locations, which is aesthetically breathtaking. They went to Kamakura, Enoshima, and Kyoto in Japan, Calgary, Alberta in Canada, Lazio, Tuscany, and Umbria in Italy, and in Seoul, South Korea.

According to Seon Ho and Yoon Jung, their favorite filming location was in Canada. As you watch the series, you’ll get why they chose Canada.

5. Go Yoon Jung’s second time working with Hong Sisters

This is Go Yoon Jung’s second time working with the Hong Sisters. In 2022, she starred in Alchemy of Souls. Her characters in Alchemy of Souls and in Can This Love Be Translated? have one thing in common: in both dramas, she portrayed complex roles that transformed from one character to another. She played Naksu and Jin Bu Yeon in Alchemy of Souls, while in Can This Love Be Translated? She appears as Cha Mu Hee and Do Ra Mi. She really did a great job portraying dual roles in the dramas.

6. Kim Seon Ho’s rom-com series following “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”

This is Kim Seon Ho‘s rom-com series following his hit drama, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, with Shin Min Ah. He made his special appearance in When Life Gives You Tangerines as Park Chung Seob.

Kim Seon Ho plays the role of Joo Ho Jin, a multi-lingual interpreter. He said portraying this role is not easy at all. For a month, he prepared for their first scene in Japan. He shared that he lost 3kg by eating red ginseng. He said he enjoyed filming, but mentally it was quite painful. Also, Seon Ho ran 20 times for the train scene in Japan. That shows how passionate and dedicated Kim Seon Ho is in his craft.

7. The cast members saw the real Aurora Borealis

Go Yoon Jung said that they saw the Aurora Borealis in real life. Kim Seon Ho shared that when he was sleeping in the car in Canada due to jet lag after filming, Yoon Jung called her and said there was an Aurora, so they got out. The director and staff also received a call and were filming the Aurora from their spots.

Yoon Jung stated, “What’s amazing is that we actually saw the aurora on the way back from filming the aurora scene.” Seon Ho added, “We saw the real aurora unexpectedly, and you can fully see it in the drama too. That shows how lucky our project was.” Seeing the beautiful northern lights in real life was such a wonderful moment.

8. Seon Ho and Yoon Jung adlibs

Yoon Jung and Seon Ho improvised a lot in this drama. Some of those are the Dobblehead dolls in Japan scene, Do Ra Mi’s drinking limoncello scene in Italy with Ho Jin, where she said “Imo, Ahjussi” to get more drinks, and the piggyback scene of Ra Mi and Ho Jin was Kim Seon Ho’s idea. They are so cute!

9. K-drama debut of Sota Fukushi

Can this Love be Translated? is Sota Fukushi’s K-drama debut. He plays Hiro Kurosawa in the series, a Japanese actor who joins Mu Hee in a dating show. In the drama, he only knows Japanese, but did you know that Sota Fukushi is fluent in English? He earned a Grade 2 Eiken certificate, a widely recognized English proficiency test in Japan, and was part of the HBO Asia series, The Head Season 2, as a computer specialist.

10. Production

It was in 2019 when it was announced that tvN was discussing the formation of a new work with the Hong Sisters, which is this drama. The following year, they planned to film in China, but due to COVID-19, the project got delayed. The production resumed in 2023.

In 2024, it was reported that it would be released on Netflix. The drama is originally slated to be released in 2025, but after careful consideration, the release date has been decided to be mid-January, and the promotional plan is currently being developed. After the drama’s long journey of production, the drama was finally released on January 16, 2026.
