Ji Chang Wook: The Unstoppable Star
Charismatic, versatile, and incredibly hardworking—Ji Chang Wook embodies all these qualities and more.

After a string of back-to-back projects, his dedication to his craft shines brighter than ever. As a devoted fan, I’ve been following his journey since I first discovered him in Suspicious Partner in 2017. Although my introduction to him came a bit late, it gave me the perfect excuse to dive into his earlier works. My weekends soon became Ji Chang Wook marathons, a delightful catch-up on his past dramas.
Following a two-year break for his military service, Ji Chang Wook returned to the screen with unrelenting energy. He’s become one of the busiest actors of his generation, and his recent roles showcase his eagerness to tackle ever more challenging characters. There’s no slowing down for this talented actor—Ji Chang Wook is unstoppable.
The past years have introduced us to a myriad of characters brought to life by this stellar actor. Let’s take a look at the recent iconic roles Ji Chang Wook has headlined:
Choi Yong Pil in Welcome to Samdalri
In this heartwarming romcom, Ji Chang Wook stars as Choi Yong Pil, a weather forecaster from the quaint town of Samdal-ri on Jeju Island. Though talented enough to pursue a high-profile career in Seoul, he chooses to stay in his hometown to care for the elders and heal from a painful breakup with his first love, Cho Sam Dal, played by the charming Shin Hye Sun.

Ji Chang Wook is a delight to watch in this drama, showcasing a fresh, mature side in the romcom genre. His portrayal of Choi Yong Pil is both distinct and endearing, and his on-screen chemistry with Shin Hye Sun has captivated viewers, earning their enthusiastic approval. Welcome to Samdal-Ri climbed to the top of the K-drama rankings on Netflix during its airing.
Park Jun Mo in The Worst of Evil
Ji Chang Wook made his debut in a Disney-exclusive drama opposite Wi Ha Jun in The Worst of Evil. If I were to rank all the dramas I’ve seen him in, this would hands-down be his best work so far. Once again, he proves he owns the action genre, skillfully executing every grueling stunt while portraying a character that is both strong and vulnerable.

Director Han Dong Wook bagged the Best Director award in the 2024 Baeksang Awards for this work. While snubbed of a nomination for his work, Ji Chang Wook continues to prove that with or without an acting award, he will continue to do well and deliver his best in every project.
Yoon Gyo Rye in If You Wish Upon Me
Inspired by a true story from the Make-A-Wish Foundation in The Netherlands, this drama marks Ji Chang Wook’s brave venture into the emotionally charged genre. Initially, I paused watching this series due to its heavy, emotional episodes, but later found healing in its heartfelt story. This role signaled a new depth in Ji Chang Wook’s acting portfolio, where he is mostly known for action and rom-com roles. His portrayal of Yoon Gyo Rye, a juvenile turned “miracle worker,” tells a relentless and touching story, showcasing his growth as an actor.

Ri Eul in The Sound of Magic
Based on the webtoon Annarasumanara by Ha Il-Kwon, Ji Chang Wook stars as the enigmatic magician Ri Eul in this musical drama. Truly an all-rounder, he acts and sings as the main character, bringing real “magic” to the screen. Acting alongside a younger generation of actors, Ji Chang Wook, as the seasoned sunbae, delivers a spectacular performance that reaffirms his esteemed status in the Korean entertainment industry.
The drama’s OST also made it onto my all-time favorite list, further highlighting the show’s enchanting appeal.

Through these roles, Ji Chang Wook continues to demonstrate his versatility and dedication, making each character unforgettable and further cementing his place in the hearts of fans worldwide.
