Ever found yourself endlessly scrolling through TikTok or YouTube at 2 a.m., binging mukbang videos on repeat? The crispy crunch of fried chicken, the saucy slurps, the sight of giant, juicy seafood—it’s enough to make your mouth water in the dead of night. Yep, I see you. We’ve all been there.

Mukbang (먹방) is a Korean term that blends the words “muk-ja” (먹자) meaning “let’s eat” and “bang-song” (방송) meaning “broadcast.” It refers to videos or livestreams where someone eats large amounts of food—often in a fun, exaggerated, or satisfying way—while chatting or interacting with an audience.

Mukbang started in South Korea around 2010, first gaining popularity on a livestreaming site called AfreecaTV. Viewers, especially those living alone, enjoyed the feeling of eating with someone and being part of a shared moment. Over time, mukbang spread globally through platforms like YouTube, and many creators began incorporating ASMR elements—like the crunch of fried chicken or the slurping of noodles—to make the experience even more engaging.
