To celebrate his birthday today, let’s get to know more INFINITE’s main-rapper, Jang Dongwoo!

Prior to his debut

Jang Dongwoo was born in Guri, Gyeonggi-do, on November 22, 1990.

For years, he was taught by JYP Entertainment. He was a classmate of EXO’s Xiumin in High School.

Prior to joining INFINITE, he and Hoya worked as backup dancers for Epik High’s Run, a music promotion show.

INFINITE debut

Dongwoo made his debut as a member of the South Korean boy band INFINITE on June 9, 2010, taking the position of the main-rapper in the group.

INFINITE H

Infinite H was created in September 2012 by Dongwoo and Infinite member Hoya, and their debut extended play, Fly High, was released in early 2013. The sub-unit has a distinct musical direction and stylistic idea than Infinite, focusing on each member’s ability to rap and perform.

Dongwoo and Hoya appeared in Tasty’s ‘Mamama’ music video in August 2013. The two collaborated on the song’s lyrics.

Solo activities

In the musical ‘In The Heights’, Dongwoo made his debut as a musical actor. Along with Yang Donggeun, Jung Wonyoung, and Shinee’s Key, Dongwoo portrays the main character ‘Usnavi’.

SM C&C, a division of S.M. Entertainment, produced the musical. The show was place in ‘Blue Square’ from September 4 to November 22. And in 2015, he was featured in Ami’s tune Sick to the Bone alongside B1A4’s Baro.

In October 2016, he released ‘Embedded in Mind’, his first self-produced single featuring Yoon Soyoon’s vocals. The song was written for the webcomic Lookism.

Military enlistment

Dongwoo enlisted for his mandatory military service, serving as an active-duty soldier, on April 15, 2019, and completed his military service on November 15, 2020.

New beginning

He departed from Woollim Entertainment after his contract expired last March 31, 2021.

On October 1, 2021, Dongwoo signed an exclusive contract with Big Boss Entertainment.
