K-Drama Review: 7 Reasons Why You Should Watch ‘Goblin’

Aside from Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo, this Korean drama also broke our hearts. The first few episodes gave us the kilig and funny moments between Ji Eun Tak and Kim Shin while it took us with a dramatic turn when we’ve find out the long history between Grim Reaper, Sunny, Kim Shin and Eun Tak.

If you haven’t watched the drama, I will try my best to limit the spoilers as possible but if you already have watched it, maybe you’ll know what scenes and events I might be talking about. *winks*

Let’s see if I can convince you with these 7 reasons on why you should watch (or maybe re-watch) Goblin or Guardian: The Lonely and Great God:

1. The casting seems like it was all ‘deity’s plan.’

This would be one of the dramas that I can say had the perfect casting. I love how the actors and actresses in this drama portrayed their character really well. Kim Go Eun, a lovely 19-year-old Ji Eun Tak is someone I would also help should I meet someone like her. I was also surprised to find out that Im Yoona’s character was a strict-yet-sweet unnie to Eun Tak, and loved how their characters bonded and grew up throughout the drama. Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook was a perfect fit for their characters. It was as if they were all meant for their roles.

2. You’ll get to appreciate the bonding between Deok Hwa and his 2 extraordinary Uncles.

Aside from the drama’s plot, you get to witness the story line of Yook Sung Jae’s character, Yoo Deok Hwa and his two samchons: Kim Shin and Kim Woo Bin. The relationship of this trio acted as a comic-relief as viewers will always keep a smiling face whenever these three shows up.

3. The adorable love stories.

Like the typical Korean dramas, love plots are somehow compulsory since it attracts a lot of viewers who love romantic dramas, and to those who identify themselves as romantics. In Goblin, we’ve witnessed a few types of love: romantic, friendship, and love for material things.

Romantic with the budding love storyline between Eun Tak and Kim Shin, as well as Sunny and The Grimreaper.

The deep friendship between Jung Hyun (the ghost in Eun Tak’s school) and Eun Tak’s mother is something I didn’t expect. I loved how she valued her friendship to Eun Tak’s mother even after death.

And of course, the love for material things, we’ve seen how Deok Hwa has been obsessed with material things. In the end, he comes to realize that material things won’t replace someone dearly once they are gone.

4. The Fantasy-Historical-Modern-Romantic genre.

This drama is a good experiment for those who are interested to watch fantasy, historical, modern, and romantic drama. Goblin showcased how different genres can blend well, as well as it showed how creative Korean writers and producers were.

5. The budding ‘bromance’ between Lee Dong Wook and Gong Yoo.

If Goblin has a third love team, I’m pretty sure this would be it. Lee Dong Wook and Gong Yoo’s characters – Grim Reaper and Goblin was actually satisfying to watch. Viewers get to watch a blossoming friendship between immortal beings who’s around 900+ years old acting like 20 something years old school kids.

The two toward the drama gets closer with each other and relied on each other so much. It was saddening when they’ve realized who they were during their past lives. Jusq, plot twist. Though, it was relieving when they’ve made amends realizing that the friendship they have now is the one they’ve missed in the past.

6. The soundtrack.

This drama consists my favorite soundtracks of all time. I’m really picky when it comes to soundtracks, (I’ve mentioned it before) but Goblin’s soundtrack is my top pick for having the best OST. I’ve been listening to their album months after the drama has finished and I even influenced my friends to listen to it too!

I mean, who wouldn’t know Punch and EXO’s Chanyeol’s ‘Stay With Me’ right?

Don’t forget to add, Crush’s – ‘Beautiful’ too!

7. The Plot

Lastly, Goblin is one of the holy grail of the most beautiful drama in 2016. Its amazing plot not only played with the viewers’ imagination, but with their feelings as well. The hardships Eun Tak experienced when she was orphaned didn’t fade in an instant as she learns the reality of living alone. Her life gets worse since she was presented as a problematic kid for being able to see ghosts.

It opens the viewers’ eyes on how cruel and sad the world is for people who might have been abused and left behind. However, it gets lighter as she meets Kim Shin, an ahjussi, who she plans on marrying due to her ability to see the sword. Eun Tak, not knowing, that the sword is actually Kim Shin’s doom.

This drama’s ending is something I didn’t expected. I actually forgot that it might happen, but I cried. I bawled my eyes out with the ending. However, I feel happy with the results of their afterlife stories.
