When the Phone Rings tells the story of Baek Sa Eon and Hong Hee Joo who got married for convenience. One day, Sa Eon receives a threatening phone call that will shake their married life.

When the Phone Rings is based on the web novel The Number You Have Dialed by Geon Eomul Nyeo. According to Director Park Sang Woo, the original story is more provocative due to the nature of its genre. He said the writers went to great lengths to tone down the provocative narratives and they also added new characters that weren’t in the web novel. They tried to dramatize and make the story richer.

2. Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin’s Chemistry

We cannot deny the fact that Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin’s chemistry as a married couple is one of the best. It is one of the best pairings this year! But did you know that Yeon Seok and Soo Bin first worked together in a coffee ad? Yeon Seok said during the press conference of the series that back then, they were a little awkward with each other because they were both shy unlike now. Yeon Seok didn’t try hard to get close to Soo Bin at first and tried to take his time getting closer to her keeping pace as they were filming together. In the end, he thinks they got really close to each other. That built-up chemistry explodes in the end.

According to Soo Bin, their chemistry is amazing but their first impressions of each other were cold although it took some time for them to get close. They became close and comfortable with each other towards the end. She learned a lot from Yeon Seok from being around him and watching him take care of the staff and actors and she thinks it’s so admirable.

3. The Cast Members’ Preparation for their Roles

The cast members worked so hard and prepared to portray their respective roles in this series.

Yoo Yeon Seok plays the role of Baek Sa Eon, a presidential spokesperson. Yeon Seok said that since his role is a presidential spokesperson with a news anchor background, he looked up videos for it as a reference and learned from the MBC announcer, Jeon Jong Hwan. He also tries to get immersed in his cold and sensitive character.

Chae Soo Bin who portrays the role of Hong Hee Joo, a sign language interpreter, Soo Bin shared that before they started shooting the series, she met with a sign language instructor, and two months before the shoot, she already memorized all the sign language she needed to do for the series.

Heo Nam Jun who transforms into a psychiatrist and a content creator named Ji Sang Woo, said since he doesn’t appear on screen much as a psychiatrist taking care of patients, in preparation for his role, he read the script with his favorite scenes while listening to Day6’s songs.

Nam Gyu Ri said that in preparation for her role as announcer Na Yu Ri, the production team introduced her to announcer Jung Da Hee and had speech lessons.

4. Yoo Yeon Seok’s MBC Comeback Drama After 9 years

It’s been 9 years since Yoo Yeon Seok last starred in the MBC series it was in the 2015 rom-com series, Warm and Cozy. His debut series was in MBC, and he starred in General Hospital 2. He said MBC feels like a home to him and it’s great to be back doing a series with MBC.

5. Romance Thriller Series with 12 Episodes

When the Phone Rings is a romance thriller series with 12 episodes. As stated by Director Park Sang Woo, the drama feels like a thriller in the beginning, but as the series progresses, the viewers will see the story getting warm and fuzzy with the four main characters in the series.
