AO EXCLUSIVE: A Dream Fulfilled — Jay Chang Finally Meets Filipino SUNLIGHTs
Written by: Rocelle Jean Gloria
For years, the Philippines was more than just a destination on Jay Chang‘s travel wishlist; it was a place he longed to visit, a country tied closely to his roots, family, and identity. This June, that long-awaited dream finally became reality as he officially kicked off his first-ever Philippine Mall Tour, beginning with a heartfelt press conference organized by Starlike Music, with support from Seoul Vibes Manila and TimelessNotes Live.

From the moment he stepped on stage, Jay’s excitement was impossible to miss. While Filipino SUNLIGHTs have spent years hoping to see him in person, Jay revealed that the feeling was very much mutual.
“I’ve wanted to come here for a very long time,” he shared.
Growing up, his family had often talked about bringing him to the Philippines, but circumstances never seemed to align. Over the years, countless messages from fans encouraged him to visit, making the wait even more meaningful. Now, not only is he finally experiencing the country firsthand, but he’s also looking forward to exploring different cities and reconnecting with relatives he has yet to meet.
The visit holds a deeper significance beyond performances and fan events. For Jay, this journey is also about embracing his Filipino heritage.
When asked what he hopes Filipino SUNLIGHTs will remember after this tour, his answer reflected both pride and sincerity.
“I would like Filipino SUNLIGHTs to remember that I could at the very least be Filipino too,” he said. “My family is from Rizal, and I want everyone to know that I am very proud and very happy to finally be here and meet everyone.”

His appreciation for the Philippines extends beyond family ties. Throughout the press conference, Jay spoke warmly about the country’s passion—particularly when it comes to music. He revealed that one of his songs, Four Seasons, is dedicated to Filipino SUNLIGHTs, describing it as a song about gratitude and appreciation for the unwavering support he has received from fans.
Music, unsurprisingly, remained at the center of the conversation. Jay expressed admiration for several Filipino artists, including Zack Tabudlo and Dionela, saying he feels honored to be recognized alongside talents he personally enjoys listening to.
When asked about his favorite Filipino song, he pointed to Marilag, explaining that its sound closely resembles the kind of music he hopes to create and release in the future.

Food also became a lively topic during the event. Jay happily revealed that sinigang remains his favorite Filipino dish, a meal made especially memorable because his grandparents used to cook it for him. He also shared his love for shrimp, joking that he’s no longer allergic, and laughed while recounting a cousin’s recommendation to try the beloved Filipino favorite, Mang Inasal.
Reflecting on his career so far, Jay identified one performance that remains especially close to his heart: his rendition of Love Me Right during Boys Planet. While many fans remember the stage for its energy and charisma, Jay’s fond memories come from a simpler place.
“It was purely about having fun,” he explained. “There was no pressure.”

That same authenticity continues to shape his artistry today. Asked which genre best represents him, Jay immediately answered R&B and soul, noting that he gravitates toward music that makes people feel something. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue exploring R&B sounds while potentially incorporating choreography into future releases. He also expressed interest in trying a traditional ballad concept—something he has yet to fully explore as an artist.
Among the many thoughtful questions from the media, some lighter moments drew laughter from the room, including an unexpected inquiry about his favorite crayon color. Having just returned from the United States the previous week, Jay appeared relaxed, cheerful, and fully immersed in the experience of finally being in the Philippines.
Perhaps the most memorable moment of the press conference came during his closing message.

“Thank you so much for having me here,” he said. “Even though it’s been so short, I don’t think I’ve felt this at home in a very long time. This is truly a dream come true for me. I’m proud to be Pinoy.”
His voice carried genuine emotion as he thanked Filipino SUNLIGHTs for their overwhelming support. Though his Philippine visit has only just begun, Jay assured fans that this won’t be the last time they’ll see him.

“We just started, but I can’t wait to be back,” he said. “Thank you for giving me so much love. I appreciate it.”
For an artist who spent years hoping to make this journey, the Philippines has already become more than another stop on a tour schedule. It has become a place of connection, belonging, and homecoming, a sentiment that Filipino SUNLIGHTs were more than happy to return with open arms.
