Passionate Cake Girls: Meet Red Velvet Through 5 Solo Projects
Written by: Gerrica Viado

Red Velvet is a five-piece girl group under SM Entertainment. The group made their debut in 2014 with Happiness. They then added their final and youngest member into the lineup with their 2015 track Ice Cream Cake.
Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri, whom their fans affectionately call Cake Girls, have shown their love and dedication to their craft throughout the 10 years they have been together. They have demonstrated various sides and sounds through different concepts with each comeback.
Aside from group activities, all 5 members have ventured into solo projects they are equally passionate about. Here are 5 of their solo projects to know the members a little bit better:
Irene: Double Patty, 2021 movie

Leader and K-pop’s Original Visual Irene made her film debut with a lead role in the South Korean drama film, Double Patty.
She stars as Lee Hyun Ji, an aspiring anchor who works at a homemade hamburger restaurant called Burger from Heaven. Actor Shin Seung Ho stars opposite her and plays the role of Kang Woo Ram, a foodie and a struggling athlete.
The movie tells the story of young people embarking on a journey to chase their dreams – along with the ups and downs that come with doing so.

Seulgi: Nothing Special But Special photography exhibition

Red Velvet’s main dancer has always shown a love for art. Seulgi will hold her first film photography exhibition from October 13 to 20 at WWL STUDIO at Seodaemungu, Seoul.
The exhibition will feature an array of film photos, including photos Seulgi, herself, has taken over the years. It will also feature shots of the singer by photographer Rie.
The photography exhibition will center around the theme “Ordinary but Special”, aiming to show Seulgi’s daily life and thoughts through a camera lens.

Wendy: Theatrical debut in the musical Rebecca

Aside from serving vocals as Red Velvet’s main vocalist, Wendy has also stepped into the world of theater. She made her theatrical debut in 2023 through the musical Rebecca, for its 10th-anniversary performance.
She starred as I, who is the new wife of the character Maxim DeWinter. Wendy successfully portrays her character as evolving from a delicate and pure woman to a determined woman with hidden strength.
“I’ve always dreamed of performing in a musical, and I’m glad to realize that dream with such great work and characters,“ Wendy said of her theater debut.
The musical ran from August 19 to November 19, 2023, at Shinhan Card Hall.
Joy: The One and Only, 2021 drama

Joy officially debuted as an actress in 2017 with the drama The Liar and His Lover. But it’s her latest starring role in the 2021 drama The One and Only that let her show a new and different side than what fans usually see on stage.
The One and Only revolves around the story of three terminally ill women who meet at a hospice.
She starred Seong Mi Do, a social media influencer who was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Behind all the glitz and glamor, she hides her loneliness. After her diagnosis, she is forced to accept the impending end of her shiny life.
