Studio Ghibli’s “The Boy and the Heron” to be shown in Philippine cinemas starting January 8, 2024!

Calling all Filipino Studio Ghibli fans!

Academy Award winner Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animation masterpiece “The Boy and the Heron” will be shown in the Philippines starting January 8, 2024! This is the first Miyazaki film to be shown in Philippine cinemas.

The film earned critical acclaim during its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was recently awarded Best Animated Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and currently holds a 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with most critics lauding the film’s thought-provoking themes and beautiful visuals. 

The film also premiered at No. 1 in Japan, which marked the biggest opening weekend for a Miyazaki film in the country, and also premiered with a record-breaking $12.8 million at the North American box office.  It earned Miyazaki his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Motion Picture and it led the box office after its opening in South Korea, Taiwan, and France as well.

Miyazaki is a director, writer, producer, and the co-founder of Studio Ghibli. He is known for well-loved films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises among others.
