Get to know Jang Dong Yoon including his dramas and movies!

With the popularity of Korean entertainment around the world, it’s hard to miss the talented actors and actresses of this generation. We watch their dramas and movies, but we must also get to know them more!

Jang Dong Yoon is that one actor that captured my eye. With his good looks and great acting skills, Jang Dong Yoon proves that he’s someone we should watch out for. He starred in a good number of dramas and movies. He showed us his charm and kindness. What’s not to love about Jang Dong Yoon?

So, if you’re just getting into “DongUniverse”, here are 10 things about Jang Dong Yoon:

1. ’92-liner

Jang Dong Yoon was born on July 12, 1992.

He was born in Daegu, South Korea. He has an older brother named, Jang Dong Jin and a pet cat named Dongee.

2. Known for his bravery

In 2015, he was commended for his bravery when he came across a robbery at a convenience store in Seoul’s Gwanak District.

The robber was threatening the store clerk and the robber had a lethal weapon at that time. Due to Jang Dong Yoon’s quick action, he called the police and the robber was arrested.

He received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

When he appeared on the news, a lot of entertainment agencies called him. He eventually joined Clover Company.

Fun fact #1: he went to the convenience store to buy a lottery ticket.

Fun fact #2: he already got an internship offer from a finance company, but he rejected it and joined Clover Company. Thus, starting his acting career.

3. Completed his mandatory service in 2014

He began his mandatory service in 2012 when he was 19 years old. He served from May 2012 until February 2014.

Since he already completed his military service, he will never have a military break and we don’t have to miss him!

4. A graduate of Economics and Finance

Jang Dong Yoon graduated from Hanyang Unversity.

He originally wanted to study Korean Literature or Journalism but he got rejected from all the colleges he applied for these courses.

5. Loves poetry

He loves reading and writing. He’s a big fan of poetry and wishes to publish his own poetry one day!

In an interview, he said his favorite word is “love”.

6. Dream job

If he hadn’t become an actor, he wanted to get a job in the media field.

He wanted to be a film director, author, or a journalist.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get into that field. But luckily, being an actor is somewhat close to the field he wants.

7. Does not have an Instagram account

It’s too bad that he doesn’t have any SNS but thankfully, his agency, Dongyi Company, posts updates about him.

8. He won 4 awards

Throughout his acting career, he already won 4 awards:

  • Special Short Drama Actor at the 2018 KBS Drama Awards for Just Dance
  • Rising Star Award, Actor at the 18th Korea First Brand Awards
  • Excellent Actor at the 2019 KBS Drama Awards for The Tale of Nokdu 
  • Best Couple Award with Kim So Hyun at the 2019 KBS Drama Awards for The Tale of Nokdu

These awards prove that Jang Dong Yoon is a great actor! We are hoping for more awards for him soon!

9. He cross-dressed twice for an acting role

Many know that he cross-dressed in The Tale of Nokdu, but did you know that he also cross-dressed in another drama?

This drama is Just Dance wherein he plays the role of Kwon Seung Chan, a teenage boy who has a passion for dancing.

10. Talents, hobbies, likes and dislikes

Aside from being an actor, he also plays the guitar. He was the electric guitar player of his college band.

He was dubbed as “Marine Boy” when he was in the military because he’s a great swimmer. He’s also certified as a lifeguard. He definitely loves swimming.

He’s favorite actor is Song Kang Ho.

He does not wear perfume and does not like soccer.

One dish he cooks best is beef wellington.

Favorite Baskin-Robbins flavor is shooting star and least favorite is mint chocolate chip.

This is a movie based on a true story and is about a North Korean defector who leaves her husband and son in China to go to South Korea. After 14 years, she meets her son again, who has a hatred for her.

Jang Dong Yoon plays the role of Zhen Chen and Lee Na young plays as his mother.

Run Boy Run (2020)

Jang Dong Yoon plays the role of Do Won, a promising runner. After he got injured in an accident, he runs to meet his childhood best friend who seemed like a different person from what he knows. Do Won eventually caught up in an incident that will change his life.


Game Development Girls (2016)

This is Jang Dong Yoon’s acting debut wherein he plays the role of Gom Gae Bal.

The drama is mostly about game development with a bit of romance between Ah Reum (Irene) and Gom Gae Bal (Jang Dong Yoon).

Solomon’s Perjury (2016-2017)

It’s a drama based on a Japanese novel of the same name.

Solomon’s Perjury is about the death of a student from an elite school. Every student from the elite school was put on trial.

Jang Dong Yoon plays the role of Han Ji Hoon, an adopted son of a former prosecutor. Han Ji Joon has a dark secret that might be the key to solving the case.

School 2017 (2017)

School 2017 follows the life of high school students who are being ranked by their grades and the pressure of being a teenager.

Jang Dong Yoon plays the role of Song Dae Hwi, the class president. He’s smart, always ranked first, but unfortunately, does not have enough money to go to his chosen college.

In my opinion, Jang Dong Yoon is so perfect for this role. He’s that one bright ray of sunshine we sure want to see at school!

A Poem A Day (2018)

A Poem A Day follows the story of physical therapists, nurses, radio technologists, and trainees.

Shin Min Ho, played by Jang Dong Yoon, is a physical therapist intern who has no interest in the medical field. But since his parents are both doctors, they made him study physical therapy.

Mr. Sunshine (2018)

Mr. Sunshine is a drama about activists fighting for Korea’s independence.

Jang Dong Yoon’s role is not the main role, but he definitely did great on his part.

He plays the role of Joon Young, a member of one of the noble families.

Just Dance (2018)

This drama is about 6 girls who attended the same school and their goal is to win the dance sports competition.

Jang Dong Yoon plays the role of Kwon Seung Chan, a teenage boy who is passionate about dancing. He had to hide this fact from his friends.

As mentioned before, his role cross-dressed once or twice in this drama wherein he was forced to dress like a girl so he can join the girls in their performance. Trust me, no one believed he was actually a girl!

This is a refreshing drama to watch if you’re looking for something light. This drama does not have that much conflict but instead focusing on reaching goals and falling in love.

The Tale of Nokdu (2019)

This is based on a Naver webtoon by Hye Jin Yang.

This is a story of Jeon Nokdu (Jang Dong Yoon) who lives on an island with his father and older brother. One day, his father and brother were attacked by a group of assassins. He then followed the assassins towards the village but lost them. He met Dong Dong Ju (Kim So Hyun) during this time. To find out why they were attacked, he disguised as a woman and enters the village.

Jang Dong Yoon received praise for this drama as he played the role perfectly. He can easily switch genders. You can see that he studied his role well and that he took the time to learn how to be a woman.

Search (2020)

This upcoming OCN drama is a story about military search troop members fighting against a mysterious creature despite the struggles of the crew to escape the Demilitarized Zone.

Jang Dong Yoon plays the role of Yong Dong Jin, a graduate of a veterinary school. He’s a soldier who handles military dogs in the search party.

The drama is set to air the second half of 2020.

If We Were A Season tells the story of Hye Rim (Chae Soo Bin) and Gi Seok (Jang Dong Yoon) who were born on the same day and grew up together being close friends.

Jang Dong Yoon plays the role of Uhm Gi Seok. He is perfect for this role as he portrayed a charming, kind, and the best friend you can depend on every single time.
