Thailand’s Famous Ghost Legend and Its Hit Remake

Rooted in Thai folklore, the legend of Mae Nak Phra Khanong is a timeless story about love and heartbreak. It revolves around Nak, a young woman who died during childbirth while her husband, Mak, was away at war. Bound by intense love, Nak’s spirit remained in their home in human form to greet her husband upon his return, unaware that she had passed away until a horrifying discovery forced Mak to flee.

This folklore has inspired numerous Thai adaptations across television, film, and theater, most notably Pee Mak, the 2013 blockbuster hit starring Mario Maurer as Mak and Davika Hoorne as Nak. By blending lighthearted comedy into the tragic legend while preserving its core elements of romance and horror, the film took Asia by storm. Told from Mak’s point of view, the movie became an all-time box-office phenomenon, grossing over 1 billion baht and bringing the iconic legend to a massive global audience.
