It has been more than one week since YGIG released their double singles, “Chicka-chick-a” and “lyk that.” The bold beats of “Chicka-chick-a” compliments the smooth and feel-good “lyk that,” showing YGIG’s unique and relatable vulnerability!

The Annyeong Oppa team had the opportunity to sit down and have a talk with the YGIG members, Vien, Hazelyn, Jewel, and Maeg, for their latest release, where they shared their preparation process, what’s next for YGIG, and a message for their fans!

About the comeback singles: “Chicka-chick-a” and “lyk that

Chicka-chick-a” is a bad day banger that helps you overcome whatever situations or minor inconveniences you may encounter. It is a mood booster with Y2K vibes. The second single, “lyk that” (like that), relishes being in love. It is relaxed and reassuring.

YGIG shared that they explored different concepts and genres in their previous releases, and this time, they tried to do something different. They consider this era to be a more authentic, raw version of who they are. YGIG considers themselves to be the most hands-on during this comeback.

“This is the new YGIG.”

Behind-the-scenes of the comeback

Q: You mentioned being more hands-on this comeback. Let’s dive into the preparation process a bit. What do you think is the most challenging part in this preparation process?

Vien: Since January naghahanap na kami ng demos kung ano irerelease and kung ano ba yung dapat concept namin sa comeback, talagang pinag-isipan namin and with that nakipagcollaborate kami with our team. (Since January, we have been looking for demos and what our concept should be for the comeback. We thought really hard about it and collaborated with our team.)

Hazelyn also added that it was a long process, going through multiple internal meetings and brainstorming. “Ang nangyari rin po kase is, as in nagback to zero po kami.” (We went back to zero.)

Jewel also added that they had to think about the question, “Who is YGIG?” This was the basis for their every meeting. She also assures that they are stronger than ever, and their mental space is stronger as well. They are also very happy to have finished the music video and songs, especially since WeGo appreciates the contents they have been uploading.

Q: What’s your favorite lyric from either of the two (releases)?

Jewel: For “Chicka-chick-a,” I really like: “Rhythm sa inyong dibdib na parang donkey kong.” That was a time where we were all writing lyrics, and we only had the instrumental. So we were like thinking of different types of gibberish, and the first thing that I thought in my head was, “Rhythm sa inyong dibdib na parang donkey kong,” and I was like okay, pwede na ‘to, pwede na ‘to! And napasok sa lyrics and it’s my favorite one ever since. (…this is good, this is good! And it got included in the lyrics, and it’s my favorite one ever since.)

Maeg and Vien also shared that for “Chicka-chick-a” as well, their most favorite part would be the chant part, as it gets you hyped. Maeg shares that it is also the kind of chant the crowd will go along with. Their favorite line for “lyk that,” was described as a “very kilig part.”

“Hanggang sa’n kaya ang aabutin nitong nadarama abot ba sa mga bituin?”

Q: What do these new releases mean to you as an individual?

Maeg: Ako as an individual, both of the releases, medyo symbol of perseverance. To me, it means being able to overcome all the challenges that we face.

Jewel: It’s like a gift for myself, and for everyone as well. Kasi we worked so hard for this comeback, every single detail and all of our ideas were all put into one and everyone contributed with this project.

Vien: Binuhos namin dugo’t pawis namin dito, and yung utak, everything talaga, para lang mabuo itong part na ‘to. And para sakin, para siyang reward for us. (We poured our blood, sweat, and tears into this, including our minds, just to develop it. And for me, it’s also like a reward.)

Hazelyn: Treasure po naming lahat, parang nagsail kami after how many years, after how many challenges, obstacles na dinaanan po namin. Napunta kami sa isang island, tapos nakuha namin yung treasure na matagal na naming hinahanap. (It’s our treasure, we sailed after so many years, after how many obstacles. We arrived at an island where we found the treasure that we looked for a long time.)

YGIG also shared that they became closer together with this comeback and learned a lot more from each other, with the comeback also acting as a discovery of the different sides of YGIG.

What is next for YGIG?

Hazelyn and Jewel share that they would love to welcome new WeGo through this comeback and join bigger events, with Vien adding that they are excited to promote.

(We want to show the world, the Philippines, our songs. We also wish to perform in Visayas, and Mindanao, so we can meet our fans in every corner of the world.)

Q: On that note, is there anything you would like to tell your fans right now?

Jewel: First of all, thank you so much for waiting. Alam namin na sobrang tagal niyong naghintay, and the wait is over. (We know how long you were waiting, and the wait is over.)

YGIG: We’re back!

Hazelyn: Marami man kaming napagdaanan as a group, and now we’re coming back stronger, more powerful, and fiery stages. (We went through so much as a group, and now we’re coming back stronger, more powerful, and fiery stages.

Hazelyn: With our very passionate feeling, na makapagperform po kami. As in hindi na po kami talaga makapaghintay na makapagperform in front of our WeGo, so thank you, thank you very much for waiting. Thank you very much na nandito parin kayo para suportahan kaming YGIG and I hope na mas lalo pong lumaki ang fandom natin at makapag-welcome nang maraming-marami new WeGo.

(With our very passionate feeling, that we can perform. We cannot wait to perform in front of our WeGo, so thank you, thank you very much for waiting. Thank you very much for being here and for continuously supporting YGIG and I hope our fandom becomes even bigger and we can welcome more WeGo.)

Maeg: To add to that, thank you dahil even of course lahat tayo may pinagdadaanan, pero yung times na we were silent, we were inactive, you guys still tried to make your presence felt samin, we saw all your tweets, nakikita namin all your effort even though ‘di kami active. So sobrang grateful namin, kahit hindi kami out there, you guys still made us feel seen. Kaya thank you so much, sobrang grateful talaga kami sa mga naghintay, sa mga nag-hohope parin, sa mga nag-aanticipate for us. You guys can rest now!

(To add to that, thank you because even if all of us are going through something, but even at those times that we were silent, we were inactive, you guys still tried to make your presence felt, like we saw all your tweets, and we saw all your efforts even though we were inactive. We are very grateful, even if we were not out there, you guys still made us feel seen. Thank you very much, we are very grateful for those who waited, who hoped, and who anticipated for us. You guys can rest now!)

Hazelyn: Rest assured, the wait is finally over. Nandito lang kami. (We are here.)
