K-Film Review: A thrilling chase of emotions with ‘Citizen Of A Kind’

On the 2nd of July, an advanced screening of the comedy-crime film ‘Citizen Of A Kind’ was held by Viva Films and Viva International Pictures at SM Megamall Cinema 2.

Directed by Park Young Ju and starring Ra Mi Ran, Gong Myoung, Yeom Hye Ran, Park Byung Eun, Jang Yoon Ju, Ahn Eun Jin, and Lee Mu Saeng, the exceptional film is based on a true story of an ordinary citizen in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, who chased after the head of a voice phishing organization in 2016.

After being scammed and receiving no help from the police, Duk Hee (Ra Mi Ran) took matters into her own hands and started chasing the ‘Boss’ of the scammers in Qingdao, China.

With the help of her unexpected informant, Duk Hee bravely searched for the headquarters with her friends. Tension keeps on arising as the group discovers the dark activities of the ‘Boss’ and his workers.

3 things that you will love about ‘Citizen Of A Kind’

Reality

The film is based on a true story and unfortunately, a sad reality of a mother who got scammed while desperately wanting to provide a better life for her children. It is a reminder for us to be more careful in dealing with people who might try to take advantage of our desperations and weaknesses.

Ra Mi Ran perfectly depicts the role of Duk Hee. As a viewer, it was easy for me to sympathize with her character and admire her bravery throughout the film. You will love to see how everything ends!

Fun

Some scenes can be too much. Too much that I had to close or cover my eyes and not see the very violent moments of the film, but despite all those moments, this film was so much fun!

Yeom Hye Ran as Bong Lim and Jang Yoon Ju as Sook Ja gave the best comedic moments in the film, making Duk Hee’s dangerous chase lighter and quite enjoyable (that trip to China was truly one for the books!).

Hye Ran, whose character plays an integral part in the adventure, made the viewers scream and laugh so hard with her antics and great timing in delivering her punchlines.

Ahn Eun Jin as Ae Lim and Park Byung Eun as Detective Park were great additions to Duk Hee’s group and showed impactful performances in the film.

Thrill

My most favorite part of watching this film is hearing and feeling the reactions of the viewers inside the cinema!

It was a “gratifying chase” indeed, as we strongly felt the excitement from beginning to end. Screams filled the cinema during intense moments, anxiously telling the characters what to do!

Gong Myoung as Jae Rim really shined, not only because he’s obviously so handsome (we couldn’t help but scream because of kilig even if the scene was full of tension!), but also because of how he played his role earnestly. Jae Rim’s situation is one of the key points of the whole film and where the story will mainly revolve.

All the thrill is rooted in this ‘Boss’ played by Lee Mu Saeng who will really make your blood boil every time you see him.

Be ready for an experience that will give you a roller-coaster ride of emotions, mixed with a perfect balance of comedy that eases the tension and gives the viewers a great laugh despite feeling nervous at every scene.
