K-Drama Recommendation: My Unfamiliar Family

“We’re family, We are a family.
But we know nothing about each other.” – Eun Hee

My Unfamiliar Family depicts the story about a family whose parents, Lin Jin Sook (Won Mi Kyung) and Kim Sang Sik (Jung Jin Young), decided to have a marriage graduation. The story progresses as their children Kim Eun Joo (Choo Ja Hyun), Kim Eun Hee (Han Ye Ri), and Kim Ji Woo (Shin Jae Ha) tried to convince them otherwise.

One day, their father went missing. And when they finally found him he suffered a head injury. This caused him to forget who he was and reverted to the memories of his 22 year old self.

The family tried to adapt to their new reality as they wait for their father to gain his memories back. But then secrets that their parents had buried for the longest time begins to reveal itself. Along with the memories from the past that they thought they buried or tried to forget.

This drama is ongoing and episodes are aired every Tuesday and Wednesday.

My Thoughts:

This drama, surprisingly got me hooked after watching it for a mere 10 minutes. I couldn’t stop watching it until there’s no more episode left to watch, sadly I have to wait until next Tuesday for a new episode. Nabitin ako bes!

The story is really simple yet intricate and sensitive since it’s about family. The issues that they have as a family, the issues that they have personally, and the issues they never knew existed. They were so busy with their own problems that they didn’t get to see the real picture. They trust whatever mask was shown to them without taking time to see if its real or not.

I love the flow of the story and the way the second daughter narrates the story of their family along with her realizations in life. It also gives each characters a chance to tell their own story without getting off-track from the main one.

This drama will definitely show you the different kinds of love. It will also make you question what does love really means. This story is what happens after saying I do or finally being in a relationship. What happens after the fairytale saying “and they live happily ever after.”

After several years passed, will the love that you have at the beginning still exist in the end? Will it be able to help you get through of whatever it is that life throws at you? Or will you slowly drift apart?

What would you do if you found out that the man you love is really gay? Its just that he either don’t have the courage to come out or he can’t come out. What would you do when you find out you’re the reason for someone’s nine year relationship to fall apart? Even if you know that the reason of your failed nine year relationship before was because of your cheating partner. What would you do if you accidentally found out that one of your sibling has a different father?

These things are not impossible to happen. And some of you might even have heard these kind of stories or know someone who have a story like this. And that is what makes this drama so close to life.

If you’re looking for something new to watch, you might want to give this a try. You might even learn a lesson or two.

  1. I like this drama too. It shows how people wear masks based on their own perception of their circumstances; that the family that surrounds you can also be a stranger to you; and that relationships in whatever form requires effort. I haven’t seen a drama gem in a while but I think this has the making of one.

    1. Totally agree with you. This is really worth watching. The way everything unfolds will really make you realize a lot of things.
