Yang Sechan Opens Up About Thyroid Cancer Battle on “Problematic Men”
KBS2’s hit entertainment show “Problematic Men in the Rooftop Room” (hereafter Problematic Men) delivered another round of high-stakes trivia and heartfelt moments on its recent episode, aired last Thursday the 16th. Known for its brain-teasing challenges and fast-paced quiz showdowns, the episode brought together a star-studded cast including Song Eun-i, Kim Sook, Kim Jongkook, Hong Jin-kyung, Yang Sechan, and Joo Woo-jae, which contestants dubbed the “problem children” for their encyclopedic knowledge of the world’s most curious facts.

Last week, special guests Park Si-eun and Jin Tae-hyun, a celebrity couple known for their romantic chemistry, made a notable appearance. However, it was the deeply personal story shared by comedian Yang Sechan that struck a chord with viewers and the casts.
Yang Sechan revealed his touching connection to Jin Tae-hyun through a shared health battle wherein both men have suffered from thyroid cancer. Jin Tae-hyun, now fully recovered and reportedly off medication, received heartfelt congratulations from Sechan, who humbly added, “I am still taking medication,” drawing sympathetic responses from the room.
Opening up further, Yang Sechan recounted his own diagnosis with papillary thyroid cancer 12 years ago. He shared, “I found out during a group health checkup with other comedians. I got the call while I was in rehearsals for Comedy Big League.” In a bittersweet moment, he recalled the unique way his fellow comedians reacted to the news—eschewing solemnity for light-hearted support. “There was no time to be sad. My colleagues consoled me with a noisy reaction, saying, ‘This kid has cancer. It’s cancer~ It’s cancer~’” he said, with a laugh, showing the surprising yet sincere methods comedians use to care for one another.
Sechan also emphasized the importance of being attentive to health signals, revealing that fatigue was a key symptom in his case. His candidness not only raised awareness about thyroid cancer but also served as a reminder of the silent struggles many entertainers face behind the scenes.
We’re all rooting for your continued recovery and good health, Sechani~
