On May 6, TVN dropped their new highly anticipated drama titled “Abyss“. It’s currently ongoing so we cannot conclude anything yet but if you’re looking for reasons why you should watch it, here they are:
1. We have a new Park Bo Young persona
This is Park Bo Young’s comeback in the small screen after the successful Strong Woman Do Bong Soon in 2017. The pilot episode is proof enough to show that Bo Young’s character as the feisty prosecutor Go Se Yeon is quite a departure from her cute and innocent roles. It has the same feel as her characters in Oh My Ghost, Scandal Makers and Hot Young Bloods combined and converted into a careerwoman. Also, her chemistry with the male lead is already apparent.
2. 3 words, Ahn Hyo Seop
Still considered as a rookie actor, Hyo Seop debuted in 2015 on Splash, Splash Love. The next year he was nominated for the ‘Best New Actor’ award in MBC Drama awards for his role in Happy Life. He gained more recognition in 2017 in drama My Father is Strange and won the ‘Rookie Award’ at the Asia Artist Awards. In 2018, he finally got his first ‘Best New Actor’ award at the SBS Drama Awards for the drama Still 17.
Trust me, after episode 1 you’ll find yourself immediately stanning Ahn Hyo Seop.
3. Another promising plot
The drama revolves around the two main characters Go Se Yeon (Park Bo Young) and Cha Min (Ahn Hyo Seop) who were brought back to life by the powers of Abyss. The Abyss in this drama is a small glass ball that Cha Min received from a grim reaper. It has the power to bring back a person from the dead, but with the face of its soul.
Cha Min’s character is a chaebol that is quite lacking in the visuals department. He have a pretty fiance who decided to break up with him a few weeks before the wedding ceremony. Cha Min blames his looks and contemplates death, but a “low-flying” grim reaper accidentally grants his wish. The grim reaper then fixes the problem by bringing him back to life and giving him the Abyss.
Go Se Yeon is an ‘Ace’ prosecutor and Cha Min’s very good friend. While investigating a serial murder case, she was suddenly turned into a victim herself. Cha Min learns of his friend’s untimely death and revives here using the Abyss.
4. Supporting characters
The drama also have its fair share of good supporting actors like Lee Sung Jae, Lee Si-eon and Kwon Soo-hyun.
In episode 1 we were blessed by the cameo of Seo In Guk and Jung So Min. Watch the scene below:
So far, the biggest questions that we have for the drama is that;
“Why were they revived?
“Who killed Se Yeon?”
“What should they do in Earth?”
“Are they really alive again?”
“Do they have a set time on Earth?”
“Will they die again?”
These questions are enough for the viewers to continue watching the show and see if the plot will twist and turn before their eyes and as far we know, TVN rarely disappoints.
Abyss airs in TVN every Mondays and Tuesdays at 21:30 KST. You can watch it online in Netflix.
